Birmingham Bike League 2010-2011

20111 BBL Wrap-up Congrats to the winners of the various competitions! Male Overall – Pat Allison, Female Overall – Hallie Blunk, Green Jersey – Ed Merritt, Polka-dot KOM Jersey – Tie between Pat Allison and Justin Bynum. See you next year!

Feb 19 – BBL Finale Beautiful ride today to end up the BBL training season and kick off the racing season. Good luck everyone at the Camp Sumataunga training race tomorrow! Please review the recap from today’s ride so I can fill in the question marks on the results and then announce the series winners. Check out the partially updated points total.

Feb 12 – Ride to the sun, part II A hearty group of about 20-25 riders pulled out from the Irondale Starbucks with snow still on the ground and ice still in the puddles. But the temperatures warmed up quick, and by the end people were shedding arm warmers and shoe covers. Read the quick recap and updated points total.

Feb 5 – Ride to the sun About 20 hearty individuals endured the cold and snow for an excellent BBL despite the conditions. Read the full recap for all the details and/or check out the updated points total.

Feb 3 – Update on Andy Andy had surgery on Tuesday and is still in the hospital recovering. Please read this update from Jim Brock to find out the details and how to contact Andy to encourage him during his recovery.

Jan 29 – Beautiful warm weather recap Wow! The weather didn’t disappoint. We had some chaos in the first attack zone with gravel in a corner claiming a rider and one of the six suicidal dogs on Camp Winnie claiming another rider as a victim. Read the ride recap for all the details. Also check out the updated points total. The team and individual competitions are very tight going into the final few rides of the series.

Jan 22 – Something new, something old recap Bitter cold today, but better than stuck inside on a trainer! Read the complete ride recap and check out the updated points total. I’m still missing a few places so please fill in the details in the comments or via email, but it looks like the Will Hibberts and Andy Maddux powered Alabama Masters to a team victory and the extra 2 bonus points for the day.

Jan 15 – Thawing out finally! Ride report Check out today’s ride recap. We made it through all the icy stretches, and had an exciting showdown on the attack zones. The points race is tightening up. Check out the updated points total and see you next week!

Jan 8 – Ride report Beautiful weather today with lots of action in the day’s 3 attack zones and KOM. Read the ride recap here or check out the updated points total. Please email me with any corrections or additions.

Jan 2 – Brief ride report After having to postpone due to weather, the postponed BBL went off on Sunday in beautiful weather conditions. I have updated the points based on feedback received from those who were able to participate in the ride.

BBL with Hwy 78 attack zone

We will use the same new green jersey attack zone as last week. The attack zone is from the bridge near the I-20 construction area to the yellow cross intersection sign on Hwy 78 is just over 4 miles long ends on a downhill followed by about 1/2 mile flat road. This is a green jersey attack zone. This is also a fairly busy road. If you cross the yellow line, you could seriously get hurt or killed so please stay on YOUR SIDE of the road!!!

The second attack zone will be the long version of the Sterrett attack zone, which will begin as soon as we cross the county line bridge on Wolf Creek Rd and end at the normal spot on Co Rd 55.

Two KOMs will wrap up the KOM competition. Vandiver will be the first KOM, and Karl Daly will be the second KOM. Short award ceremony when we make it back to the Irondale Starbucks parking lot. I will have a printed version of the points spreadsheet and should be able to calculate the final points when the ride is completed. See y’all tomorrow!

Fundamentals and purpose of the BBL:

  1. Safety first and foremost
  2. Fun and fitness
  3. The intent is a structured winter training medium for riders who compete (Racers cat 5 – pro) not specific to just road.

Structured training ride:

  1. The ride is an endurance pace averaging 18-20 mph with multiple hard efforts (attack zones) Attack zones will have much higher avg speed!
  2. The riders will briefly regroup at the end of designated attack zones
  3. There will be at least one store stop unless announced prior to the start that there will not be any stops.

Notes:

  • While any and all are welcome to join the ride those who are not familiar or have never competed may or may not be able to keep pace therefore those that can not keep pace, it is up to them to be responsible for knowing that route as well as having all necessary items to in able them to get back to the point where they started.
  • In some cases the ride may or may not totally regroup it depends if a particular rider or riders can or cannot maintain the average speed during an ATTACK ZONE or OUTSIDE an attack zone.
  • THIS RIDE IS NOT INTENDED TO BE A CASUAL GROUP RIDE. IT IS A STRUCTURED WINTER TRAINING RIDE FOR THOSE WHO COMPETE.
