Maybe y’all could be back earlier for the lonely wives…

This week was a little bit slower getting started as we got everyone oriented. Future weeks arrival time will depend on the distance of the ride. Maybe we could have the wives, husbands, and kids of BBL riders have a playdate at a park in Mountain Brook, Irondale, or Leeds during the ride. Any takers out there?

Maybe the lonely wives could ride too….
The Bass Pro Shop opens this week (11/20), so heads up for lots of traffic in that area beginning this weekend.

Maybe it was just me, but there were times during the ride last week (11/15) when I felt that the pace was too fast. On at least one occasion, it was some of the newer riders pushing the pace at the front. My understanding is that one of the goals of these rides, especially these early ones, is to welcome and introduce new people to the sport. I know everyone’s at different levels of fitness and that it’s difficult to identify an ideal pace, but there were definately times last week when my heart rate was in upper Zone 4 – too fast for base training.
Also, we should try to teach people carry their speed over the top of hills – i.e., don’t stop pedaling when you crest a hill.
My two cents…

@Darrell – I think part of the problem may have been too much variability in the pace. At some points, it felt like we were absolutely crawling and then at other points it felt like we were going to fast (I hit zone 4 a couple times, too). The key to keeping people from going too fast is starting out the ride at a nice upper zone 2, lower zone 3 so that people don’t feel so fresh when they hit the front that they feel like they need to pick up the pace. Also, I definitely agree about carrying speed over the top of the hills … one way to keep that is to remind everyone to PEDAL ON THE DOWNHILLS! If you are at the front and you are coasting then you are doing something wrong! This will cause everyone to bunch up behind you and then have to hit their brakes. Pedal all the way to the bottom of the hill.
@John – the total distance for the ride last week was right about 55 miles. I am going to post a more detailed map with elevation profile and mile markers in the coming week or two.

With a start time of 9, it shouldn’t be hard for people to show up ‘on time’ and be ready to roll at 9.

I want to thank everyone involved with this series for the work involved in putting on this series – for me, it made for a very enjoyable winter season. Being a Triathlete, I don’t know many cyclist and appreciate you all putting up with me – especially when I dare to bring the SoftRide in pack riding. Thanks again and I look forward to next winter.
