Feb 12 – Ride to the sun, part II recap
12th February 2011 by brtoone
A hearty group of about 20-25 riders pulled out from the Irondale Starbucks with snow still on the ground and ice still in the puddles. But the temperatures warmed up quick, and by the end people were shedding arm warmers and shoe covers. The action out on the road was definitely hot. Here is how all the attack zones played out:

The first attack zone started out quickly. Mike lackey led things off with a strong attack over the first steep climb creating a pretty good gap. Pat Allison had to go on the defensive and try to work him back. After a close call with a dog and few more attacks, we had rolled Mike back in. Chris Allison then seemed to effortlessly roll off the front without any response. As that gap grew, Morgan Raimey put in a monster effort to bring things to a bunch sprint. Will Hibberts launched a flyer, followed by Pat Allison, but brought some strong sprinters along with him. Ed Merrit came by Pat with Jacob Tubbs on his wheel for the finish. Ed, Jacob, Pat, Will, Brian.
The second attack zone began slowly with a few big hitters playing games off the front. Nobody seemed to want to work so the pack came back together on the hill. Will closed the final gap to the few off the front, followed by a massive lead out by Jason Kellen. Behind him, the sprint started late with Brian and Will jumping first. Pat Allison came around Brian and Chris Allison came around Pat for the finish. Chris, Pat, Brian, will, Justin.
KOM Vandiver. Jason Kellen went on the attack early and held a strong tempo, but was reeled in by morgan about half way up. it stay calm until just before the curve, when Justin Bynum launched. Pat Allison was quickly on his wheel, but countered by Brian Toone. There was no catching Brian as he created a huge gap before the finish. Pat came around Justin with Will close behind. Brian, Pat, Will, Justin, Adam Golberg.
KOM Karl. The climb was calm until Just before the top. Will Hibberts set a strong tempo until Wes Douglas attacked. Brian and Will were quick to follow. Will led the sprint out with Brian coming around the right and Pat on the left. The sprint was long and into a headwind but Pat’s initial Gap was enough to hold off brian by barely a wheel at the top. Pat, Brian, Justin, Will, Mike
Brian,
All looks right except for the sterrit zone. Which makes a huge difference in the Team Points.

Also, Ive got your team down for 8 points today. And was thinking the bonus points added to the team also. If not, Your team would win with 84. Me and the masters tied in second with 82. That look right?

Ah, thanks for catching that Pat, I didn’t know Chris had come around you on the Sterrett zone. I’ve updated the points now, but I have only been using the extra team bonus points to be added back to each individual rider’s score. I figured the team competition would be based on the pure point total without the team bonus. You’re right about my team points, too, I had missed adding Justin’s back into our team total for today. So that does put my team in the lead for the competition. It should be an exciting grand finale next week to wrap up the points!
