Strava Showdown

Fun showdown again this year. Mark and I really went back and forth on this one. I definitely set some power records along the way trying to chase his times! Already looking forward to next year ... please send me your suggestions for improvement. kartoone76@gmail.com

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT THIS WEEK'S CLIMB

This week's climb is a tricky one. Strava will match the start of the segment on Co Rd 41 near the last cross street in Mt Laurel (near Gravlee Fitness) ... see the top-left video. The left turn onto double oak way is DANGEROUS ... particularly watch for a car coming up behind you trying to pass you as you are making the left turn. Plus there is gravel in the turn. Plus the turn is greater than 90 degrees.

Once you make it past the gate, you climb up a 25% pitch and turn left at the top. Then you have a series of high speed rollers that are covered loosely. The pavement appears and disappears at spots depending on which side of the road you are on. Your safest line is to basically stay in the middle and veer slightly to one side or the other depending on how far out the missing pavement goes. This is shown in the second video (top-right) and the fourth video (bottom-right).

Once you make it past the rollers, the pavement gets worse in spots, but the speeds are much lower so you should be fine through there. Eventually you start climbing steeply again up to the top of the first ridge line taking you to the Double Oak Way roller coaster (50 MPH both directions on a good day).

At the bottom-out "feel the g-force" section of the roller coaster, there is about a two foot strip of dirt. I hit it yesterday at 45mph with no problem, but you've got to make sure you are riding straight through it and not turning. The final 20% stretch leads into a gravel covered switchback. The segment finishes just after the switchback, but to be safe I would push the pace all the way into the gravel underneath the doppler radar.

Good luck, and remember this is just for fun, so be safe out there!

Overall results through Week 3

These are tabulated by calculating the sum of all your times. If you miss a week, then you are given the time of the slowest rider plus a 30 second penalty (with the exception of week 4, in which case you were assigned the same time as Brian Toone - the only rider to do the climb that week)
